The Ultimate Packing List for Your Alaskan Cruise Adventure

by Brad A. Swezey

When embarking on an Alaskan cruise, packing the right items can make all the difference in ensuring a comfortable and enjoyable trip. With varying weather conditions and activities, being prepared for anything is essential. This comprehensive packing list will help you bring all the essentials while also considering space and weight limitations.  Having gone there four different times, I think the critical thing is layers and keeping dry.

Clothing:

  1. Layers:
    • Base layers (thermal tops and bottoms) are essential for keeping warm during chilly Alaskan mornings and evenings.
    • Mid-layers (fleece jackets, sweaters) provide insulation and warmth without adding too much bulk.
    • Outer layers (waterproof and windproof jackets, pants) protect you from rain, wind, and the cold during your excursions.
  2. Footwear:
    • Waterproof walking shoes or hiking boots: Ideal for excursions on varied terrain.
    • Comfortable sneakers or walking shoes: Suitable for onboard activities and casual exploration.
    • Slippers: Perfect for keeping your feet warm while in your cabin.
    • Warm socks: Look for moisture-wicking materials to keep your feet dry and warm.
  3. Accessories:
    • Gloves: Opt for waterproof and insulated gloves for better protection.
    • Hats: Bring a warm hat for colder days and a sun hat to shield you from UV rays.
    • Scarves or neck gaiters: These versatile accessories add warmth and can be easily stashed in your daypack.
    • Sunglasses: It can be sunny!
  4. Formal attire (Depends on your cruiseline):
    • Dress clothes: Pack at least one formal outfit for dinners or special events on board. This may include a dress, skirt and blouse, or dress pants and a blouse for women, and dress pants, dress shirts, and a sports jacket for men.

Outdoor Gear:

  1. Daypack: Bring a lightweight, waterproof daypack for carrying essentials during excursions. (While I did this on a cruise to the Caribbean, this pretty much what I bring when I stop off a ship wherever I am. (See video)

Binoculars: To observe wildlife and scenic vistas up close.

  2. Reusable water bottle: Stay hydrated and reduce plastic waste.
  3. Walking sticks or trekking poles: For added stability during hikes if needed.

Electronics and Entertainment:

  1. Camera or smartphone: Capture memorable moments and breathtaking landscapes.
  2. Chargers and power bank: Ensure your devices stay charged throughout the trip.
  3. Travel adapter: Check if your cruise ship has international outlets and pack an adapter if needed.
  4. Books or e-reader: For relaxation and downtime.
  5. Travel games or playing cards: To enjoy with fellow travelers during leisure time.

Toiletries and Personal Items:

  1. Travel-sized toiletries: Including shampoo, conditioner, body wash, toothpaste, and a razor. (Cabins usually have shampoo, conditioner and soaps, but I know some people like their own brand)
  2. Sunscreen and lip balm: Choose SPF 30 or higher, even on overcast days.
  3. Insect repellent: Keep mosquitoes and other insects at bay during shore excursions.
  4. Medications and first aid kit: Remember any prescription medications and pack a basic first aid kit for minor ailments.
  5. Seasickness remedies: Over-the-counter options or motion sickness bands can be helpful.

Travel Documents:

  1. Passport, driver's license, and copies: Keep these secure and readily accessible.
  2. Cruise documents and boarding passes: Print or store digital copies on your phone.
  3. Travel insurance: Consider purchasing travel insurance for peace of mind.

Conclusion: An Alaskan cruise promises a once-in-a-lifetime experience filled with spectacular wildlife, pristine landscapes, and unforgettable adventures. By packing wisely and efficiently, you'll be well-prepared for whatever the journey brings. Happy cruising!
